Course on COUNSELLING AND STRESS MANAGEMENT

 

      I.     Objectives

 

This course aims at developing the professional counselling skills among the students by:

 

  • Providing an overview of the counselling processes and techniques.
  • Creating a forum for practicing the basic counselling skills.
  • Selecting the key areas and situations where management can and should help employees in dealing with performance, absenteeism,  unacceptable behaviour, tardiness, etc.
  • Understanding stress and dealing with issues related to it. Making stress work for you.

1)    Understanding counselling and Intervention in Organizations

 

a)     Essentials of Skills: Paraphrasing, Empathy

b)    Listening and Responding

c)     Nonverbal Clues

d)    Effective Feedback

e)     Performance Counselling

f)     Counselling in Problem Situations

g)    Interpersonal Conflicts

h)    Integration and Action Plan

 

2)    Understanding stress, stressors:

 

a)     Nature of Stress - Constructs and Problems

b)    Occupational Stressors

c)     Role Stress

d)    Sources of Managerial Stress (Causes of Stress: change & challenge)

e)     Symptoms of Stress: in thoughts, feelings, behaviours & physiology

f)     Differentiating between distress & eustress

g)    Stress and Motivation

h)    Stress and Management Change

i)      Manage and use stress for productivity

 

 III.     Exam: 9:30-12:00 on Saturday, January 7 (A),  21 (B) and February 18, 2012 (C):

                 

            09:25   -last moment to submit assignment/project paper (no excuses after)

                        -explanation of exam procedure

            09:30   -Written/Oral exams simultaneously

 

 IV.        Exam Procedure: (Same as the previous class)

 

a)     ASSIGNMENT (Home -15 points): recording and transcript of actual counselling with your comments on key elements of counselling principles & skills exhibited therein.

b)    ORAL (VIVA – about 5 minutes - 20 points)

c)     WRITTEN (1h 45min – 50 points)

d)    CLASS ATTENDANCE / PARTICIPATION (15 points)
