Ministries of South India

The city of Mangalore and its surroundings is situated in South Karnataka and has seen the growth of Catholicism in this area mainly due to the influence of the Portuguese trading establishments that existed in pre-Independent India. Hence, the diocese of Mangalore has grown to vast proportions in this part of South India, with local Catholics being identified by the Konkani language that is used both in their homes and in their liturgical celebrations. The people of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Katapady, comprising about 250 mainly middle-class families, were familiar to Holy Cross right from 1977 when a formation house had been started in this area and the priests would assist in the pastoral activities of the parish. The parish was eventually entrusted to Holy Cross in 2001 and the parish clergy continue to enjoy the support and cooperation of their parishioners who take part in the liturgy in large numbers. Due to the zealous efforts of Fr. Norbert D’Mello, c.s.c., the Pastor, and the generous support of the people, a parish hall is built, the portico of the church was recently renovated and a belfry constructed. Family visits, celebration of the sacraments, animation of different associations and youth movements being part of the ministry, this parish also serves as a place for exposure and pastoral experience for the candidates of Holy Cross in the nearby formation house.
