Ministries of South India

Pune is situated in what is known as the Deccan Plateau, not far from the metropolitan city of Mumbai. Being above sea level, it has a salubrious climate and is also known as a ‘Pensioners’ Paradise.’ Like Mumbai, Pune too has a large migrant population, many of the migrants being Catholics coming from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa. The Sacred Heart Parish, situated in Yeravada, was erected in the late 1970s but soon assumed proportions that were too large to constitute a single parish unit. The Sacred Heart Sub-Centre was thus erected in 2002 and entrusted to Holy Cross who have a scholasticate in Ramwadi itself. The First Parish Priest was Fr. Leo D’Souza, c.s.c., who along with Fr. Joseph Alphonse, c.s.c. and several scholastics ministered to the people, most of whom are not economically well-to-do economically. Now Fr. P. Chellapandy and Fr. John Thekkemaly administer the spiritual need of the people. Up to now, the sub-centre does not have a church of its own and liturgical services are held either in the chapel of Papal Seminary or the Carmelite Convent in the seminary campus. Plans are now underway for acquiring land and building a church and presbytery.
